Exclusive: Breakthru Bolsters $500M California Business With Riboli Family Wines
May 8, 2025Breakthru Beverage Group is adding another significant piece to its nearly $500 million California portfolio with a new deal to handle the Riboli Family Wines range in the Golden State. Riboli’s stable is anchored by Italy’s Stella Rosa, the second-ranked imported wine brand in the U.S. in volume terms with national depletions of just over 4 million cases last year, according to Impact Databank. According to Breakthru, Stella Rosa is the second-largest wine brand in value in California and the top-ranked import.
In addition to Stella Rosa, Riboli Family’s lineup includes their Riboli Fine Wine division including their California estate brands like San Simeon, Highlands 41, Maddalena, Opaque, and Jada, along with its import brands, housing Italian labels like Riva de la Rosa and Famiglia Rivetti; French wines from Les Glories and Champagne Nominé-Renard; and New Zealand brand The Champion. Last year the company expanded with ready-to-serve cocktail label Spritz del Conte, described as a modern take on the Aperol Spritz.
“This partnership with Breakthru Beverage Group—another family-led organization that shares our values and vision—positions us to adapt to California’s evolving market while honoring our heritage,” said Riboli Family president and third-generation owner Steve Riboli.
Riboli Family joins a Breakthru California portfolio that also includes brands from Gallo, Copper Cane, J. Lohr, Silver Oak, Far Niente, Folio, Bouchaine, Purple Brands, and Bardstown Bourbon Co., among others. Across its 16-market national footprint, Breakthru’s revenues are projected at $8.5 billion this year, according to Shanken’s Impact Newsletter.
Riboli currently distributes its own brands in the California market, and will be transitioning to the Breakthru portfolio over the next two months. In a statement, Riboli Family said the “strategic realignment comes in response to shifting industry trends and consumer preferences in California,” adding that the company is “committed to supporting its California sales team members through the change, with Breakthru actively folding in team members from Riboli’s extensive California operations.”
“We recognize the profound impact our team members have had on building our success and culture,” said Paul Roberts, SVP sales at Riboli. “This expanded relationship with Breakthru creates exceptional growth and development opportunities for our talented staff within a larger organization while preserving the family-focused environment they value. —Daniel Marsteller
