Nevada’s Frey Ranch Whiskies Rising From A Small Base
June 27, 2025Frey Ranch is among the pioneers of grain-to-glass spirits, distilling and aging a portfolio of whiskies made exclusively with grains grown on the Frey family’s farm in Fallon, Nevada. Frey’s core offerings (retailing for around $40 and up) include a Straight Bourbon, a Farm Strength (cask strength) Bourbon, and a rye. Three of the craft distiller’s whiskies have received 91 points or higher from Whisky Advocate’s tasting panel in recent years.
Frey Ranch chief marketing officer Mike Price tells SND that sales are growing strongly from a small base, despite the company’s relatively limited distribution territory. “We’re up 139% versus 2024 overall and ahead of our current year goals by about 6%,” he says, adding that the brand is on track to post depletions of 18,500 cases this year. Frey Ranch’s whiskies are currently available in 15 states, with six of those markets less than a year old.
Recently, Frey Ranch has made inroads in chain retailers, partnering with ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in Florida, Meijer in Michigan, and roughly 120 Whole Foods locations across the U.S. In addition, the brand has a strong presence at retail in its home state of Nevada.
Co-founder Colby Frey says the grain-to-glass messaging has connected the brand with its consumers and compares his work to that of generations of small winemakers. “What grapes are to wine, grain is to whiskey,” he says. “Why don’t we talk about the grains and where they’re grown and how they’re grown?”
He adds that he and his team grow their grains with the intention to distill, leading to lower crop yields but higher quality. According to Frey, the grain-to-glass concept has been attractive to independent retailers looking for whiskies that can stand out from the crowd.
