Senate-Approved Hemp THC Ban Delayed for a Year

July 15, 2025

A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators has agreed to delay the hemp THC ban included in the Senate Appropriations bill by one year, giving a temporary reprieve to the industry. The pause, agreed upon by Democrat Jeff Merkley and Republican Mitch McConnell, would give hemp companies one more year to work under the existing framework established by the 2018 Farm Bill.

Merkley has said that he plans to introduce new regulations during the pause to allow for the production of CBD and non-intoxicating products. McConnell, whose bullishness on hemp in 2018 helped to create the loophole, indicated that he was only in favor of the delay to allow hemp farmers to prepare, and remains adamant that intoxicating hemp products be banned.—Shane English
