Report: E.U. Angling For 15% Tariff Rate In U.S. Talks
July 24, 2025As negotiations continue ahead of an August 1 deadline, reports indicate that the European Union and U.S. may reach a deal setting U.S. tariffs on E.U. imports at 15%. Bloomberg reported that such a deal could exempt certain E.U. spirits from tariffs in the U.S., with sources cautioning that talks are ongoing and the endgame far from certain.
While representing a significant increase compared with the zero-for-zero trade sought by industry players on both sides of the Atlantic, the 15% rate is seen as manageable for the E.U. as a whole, cutting in half the 30% charge threatened by the U.S. as of August 1 barring a deal.—Daniel Marsteller
