New Jersey Cannabis Sales Climbing Higher In 2025
August 19, 2025Cannabis sales in New Jersey topped $1 billion last year, and they accelerated through the first months of 2025. Comparing early 2025 to early 2024, sales are up 17% this year. According to the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission, total cannabis sales from January through March registered $277 million, a roughly $30 million jump year-over-year. The Garden State’s adult-use market generates an average of $17,000 per day in sales for each of the state’s retailers. These strong figures persist despite the state having some of the highest prices for cannabis in the U.S. and the second-lowest number of products on offer, according to data from cannabis analytics firm Headset.
In terms of scale, New Jersey’s 2024 sales figure places it between Maryland and Oregon as the 10th-largest adult-use state in the country. If sales continue to grow apace, the Garden State could quickly overtake slightly larger markets like Arizona, Washington, and Colorado, all of which have seen sales stagnate in recent years. The early 2025 sales trajectory also places New Jersey as one of the strongest growth markets in the U.S., behind only New York and Ohio, both of which activated adult-use sales well after New Jersey did in 2022.
New Jersey’s consumer preferences follow national trends, with flower, vapes, pre-rolls, and edibles making up the vast majority of sales. Flower, at 40.7% of sales as of March, maintains a dominant lead over vapes, at 27.6%; pre-rolls at 14.3%; and edibles at 13.3%, according to Headset. New Jersey stands out for its nascent beverage market with only 0.2% of sales covering beverages. This sets it apart from other states, where roughly 1.2% of sales come from cannabis-infused drinks (excluding the growing hemp THC category).
According to Headset’s data, Green Thumb-owned Rythm and The Cannabist Co.’s Triple Seven account for the top three flower products in the state, with Rythm’s two offerings retailing for more than $45 an eighth-ounce and Triple Seven at just under $25 for an eighth. In the vape category, Fernway and Simply Herb (Ascend Wellness) account for the three market leaders, with products retailing at $80 for a 2g pen and between $40 and $50 for a 1g pen.
Leading edible brands are Encore (Verano) and Effin’ (Ascend Wellness), with the average price around $20 a package. In pre-rolls, Lowell Herb Co. and Miss Grass market the top three products, with Lowell’s pre-rolls retailing around $45 for a 3.5g 6-pack of pre-rolls and Miss Grass coming in at just over $30 for a 2g 5-pack.
While the overall trend across the U.S. is for growth to slow as a cannabis market matures, New Jersey’s path forward could be different. Currently, the state only offers 152 brands covering just over 6,000 SKUs. Between January and March, SKU count grew by 158%. Despite roughly three years of legal adult-use sales, when considering the number of brands and SKUs available, it appears that New Jersey’s market is still maturing.—Shane English
