New Zealand Wine Remains Resilient, Outpacing The Market

September 16, 2025

While table wine imports suffered a third straight annual volume decline in 2024, brands from New Zealand eked out yet another gain, according to the 2025 edition of The U.S. Wine Market, Shanken’s Impact Databank Review & Forecast. Despite higher tariffs, the category is on track for its 17th consecutive increase in 2025. Kiwi wines have continued to outperform this year, as volumes in IRI/Circana channels increased 2.6% in the year-to-date period ending August 10, compared to a 5.7% decline for all table wines.

Growth was even faster at higher price points, as table wines from New Zealand priced at least $15 a 750-ml. bottle combined for an 11% increase year-to-date in volume terms at retail. Last year, New Zealand surpassed Australia to become the third-largest origin for imported table wine into the U.S.—according to the 253-page Impact report—and it ranked only seventh just 10 years ago. White wines account for roughly 95% of New Zealand wine exports to the U.S., with Sauvignon Blanc making up 90% of that total.

Gallo’s Whitehaven has been the fastest-growing New Zealand brand in the U.S. the past few years, but Constellation’s Kim Crawford is the clear market leader, according to Impact Databank, with recent gains being fueled in part by its Sparkling Prosecco expression. “Kim Crawford is a mega brand for us and continues to do well,” Sam Glaetzer, president of Constellation’s wine and spirits division, recently told SND. “It’s a hot category, and we spend a lot of time and effort to make sure we have the quality in the bottle as the leader.”

Treasury Wine Estates is another major player in the over-$15 segment with Matua, while Delegat’s Oyster Bay has seen strong growth this year from its Pinot Grigio entrant.

New Zealand has also forayed into the fast-growing non-alc wine space, notably with Opici’s Giesen 0%, which extended its range this year with Spritz Sauvignon Blanc and Spritz Rosé, both retailing at $15 a 750-ml. bottle. Giesen 0% is the hottest non-alc wine brand in the U.S. with 51% growth last year, according to Impact Databank.
