October 24, 2014•Spirits sales in control states have accelerated through the first nine months of 2014, rising 2.1% by volume, compared with 1.1% growth in calendar 2013. All 18 control jurisdictions are showing positive growth year-to-date, with Iowa registering the fastest progress at 4.1%. The two largest control states for spirits, Pennsylvania and Michigan, were up 1.2% and 2.5%, respectively. Irish whiskey (+10.4%) and cordials/liqueurs (+8.3%) represented the best-performing spirit categories over the past nine months, with the latter fueled by flavored whiskies. Control states account for 25% of all spirits volume in the U.S. market as estimated by Impact Databank.
•Pernod Ricard has extended its Perrier-Jouët Champagne brand with a new Nuit Blanche Rosé offering. A non-vintage Champagne geared toward “high-energy moments,” Nuit Blanche Rosé is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Meunier. It’s crafted to have a “sweet and intense, seductive style,” according to Perrier-Jouët cellar master Hervé Deschamps. Retailing at $80 a bottle, the new rosé joins an existing Brut Champagne ($65) in the Nuit Blanche range. In Pernod’s recently completed first quarter, Perrier-Jouët’s global sales revenue slipped 2% on a volume decline of 4%.
