August 19, 2015•From California to Switzerland, Australia to France, vintners are reporting a rapid rise in fungal diseases spreading insidiously through grapevine trunks, inflicting significant financial losses. In esca and other vine-trunk diseases, some see a threat they fear will be the defining vine blight of the 21st century—a scourge on the scale of phylloxera, the pest that nearly destroyed winemaking in 19th-century Europe. •Constellation Brands has unveiled Serpent’s Bite Apple Cider Flavored Whisky. Rolling out nationwide, Serpent’s Bite features a blend of Canadian whisky distilled from corn and rye with an infusion of apple cider flavors. The 70-proof entry, positioned primarily as a shot option, is available in 1-liter, 750-ml. and 50-ml. formats, and retails at around $15.99 a 750-ml.
•California fine wine distributor Titan Wine Selections, a division of Guarachi Wine Partners, has named Dave Giles as chain division director. Giles most recently served 11 years as a strategic retail account executive at Young’s Market Company.
