California Goes Beyond Chardonnay
September 1, 2017Chardonnay has dominated the California white wine sector for years and looks likely to remain in that position for the foreseeable future. “If Cabernet is king, Chardonnay is queen,” notes Barbara Hermann, wine buyer for the Chicago-area retail chain Binny’s Beverage Depot. Indeed, Chardonnay is far and away U.S. consumers’ favorite white varietal from the Golden State, selling 59 million cases in 2016. But while wineries continue to lead with Chardonnay, other California whites like Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc have been raising their profile in recent years, and producers are also experimenting with white blends in an effort to duplicate the runaway success of the red blend category.
