Craft Brewing and Distilling News for October 11, 2017
October 11, 2017•As the Chicago Cubs have battled in the post-season playoffs this month, their fans have noticed a sudden change in beverage choices at Wrigley Field. In a park where a massive Budweiser sign dominates the view in the outfield and Anheuser-Busch’s Goose Island has been a fixture, concession management firm Levy Restaurants has replaced many Goose Island draft handles with Heineken-owned Lagunitas IPA in the past 10 days. Levy told the Chicago Tribune it was “looking at the opportunity to try something new,” but some local observers believe the change was linked to a new investigation by the Illinois Liquor Commission and the Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau into schemes that afford major brands favored placement at retail around Chicago. Lagunitas founder Tony Magee told the Tribune he was caught by surprise by the beer orders coming from Wrigley Field. “We’re just really grateful to the Cubs for allowing us to party along with Cubs fans,” he said.
