Joel Buchman, Prominent Beverage Alcohol Attorney, Dies At 79

Leading beverage alcohol attorney Joel Buchman passed away on October 26 at the age of 79. The cause was heart failure. Born in Manhattan in 1938, Buchman was the son of legendary attorney Abraham Buchman (1916-2007). After graduating from Cornell University in 1960 and Columbia Law School in 1963, Buchman enjoyed a 50-year career in the legal profession. As a partner in the firm Buchman Buchman & O’Brien, once the largest firm specializing in alcoholic beverage law in the U.S., he was chiefly responsible for importation and distribution contracts and other corporate and regulatory matters concerning the industry.

Over the years, as many wine companies began to go public or were acquired by public corporations, Buchman became an authority in securities law. Later, he joined the firm Kantor Davidoff, continuing to practice on behalf of the drinks industry as well as other diverse fields. A contributor to many not-for-profit organizations, Buchman served on the boards of The United Way of NYC, The Grand Marnier Foundation, The Columbia-Green Hospital Foundation and other institutions.
