Craft Brewing and Distilling News for December 29, 2017

•Detroit’s Atwater Brewery plans to increase production to around 50,000 barrels by the end of 2018. Complementing the increased production, the brewer is also considering adding additional taproom locations. Owner Mark Rieth says the Atwater’s new distribution network will help to drive growth, especially in Michigan, where he estimates that retail sales could rise by 30% looking ahead. Atwater plans to launch a new barrel-aged beer in January, plus flavored variants of its Vanilla Java Porter, like Bavarian Cream, coconut, raspberry and hazelnut, through the year. Atwater’s portfolio is available in 21 states.

•Maryland-based Heavy Seas Beer is set to launch AmeriCannon Double Dry-Hopped American Pale Ale in January. The 5.75%-abv ale is made with Warrior, Cascade, Palisade and Centennial hops plus Simcoe Lupulin hop powder—a first for the brewery—for a moderate-alcohol ale that still packs a hoppy punch. Heavy Seas AmeriCannon will be available in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles and on draft throughout the brewery’s 17-state and Washington D.C. distribution footprint. AmeriCannon will be Heavy Seas’ first beer to carry the Brewers Association Independent Craft seal.
