Shift To The Off-Premise Continues, As Retailers Emphasize Pickup And Delivery

With key states including California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, and Connecticut issuing broad stay-at-home orders, beverage alcohol retailers remain open in most states (with the exception of PLCB stores in Pennsylvania, which have closed to both online and in-store traffic).

However, some large retail players are urging consumers to take advantage of pickup and delivery options to slow the spread of coronavirus. West Coast chain BevMo is currently not accepting walk-in transactions unless consumers have pre-ordered and been notified that their orders are ready, and is also steering consumers to its delivery business. In New Jersey,retailers Gary’s Wine & Marketplace and Bottle King are open only for pickup and delivery, and Total Wine & More has ramped up its pickup and delivery services across its footprint.

Suppliers are likewise shifting resources to the off-premise. “We’ve taken steps to bolster support of local off-premise retailers and distributors to meet increased consumer demand as purchasing shifts from on-premise establishments such as bars and restaurants to off-premise businesses such as grocery stores and convenience stores,” noted Constellation president and CEO Bill Newlands. “We’ve seen IRI volume in off-premise accounts for our beer business increase more than 30% in the most recent 4-week period versus their 52-week trends.”—Daniel Marsteller
