Off-Premise Wine Sales Slip On Difficult Comps, But High End Rises By Double-Digits
June 10, 2021Following the off-premise surge at this time last year, table wine sales in IRI channels have run up against tough comps recently. They fell 21% by volume and 17% in dollar terms year-on-year in the four weeks ending May 16, although they remain elevated compared with the more fair comparison of 2019. All price segments declined year-on-year, with the exception of wines priced at least $25 a 750-ml.—which rose an impressive 15% by volume and 11% in dollar terms. Both domestic wine and imports were down by double-digits overall. Sparkling wines fared slightly better, but also slipped in both volume and dollars in the most recent four-week period.
In the year-to-date ending May 16, eighteen of the top 25 table wine brands in IRI channels suffered dollar losses against last year’s performance, with the seven exceptions all priced above $10 a bottle—Josh Cellars, Stella Rosa, 19 Crimes, Meiomi, La Crema, Decoy by Duckhorn, and Kim Crawford. Sparkling wines are still growing at double-digits year-to-date in IRI channels, led by La Marca Prosecco. Twenty-two of the top 25 sparkling wine brands registered gains year-to-date, 17 of them at double-digit rates. Last year, La Marca became the market’s largest-selling sparkling wine brand overall for the first time ever, according to Impact Databank.—Juan Banaag
