Burgundy Sets New Export Record, But Warns Of Supply Issues

France’s Burgundy region saw exports jump 28% to €1.32 billion ($1.45b) last year, with 9-liter case volume rising 18% to approximately 8.8 million cases, according to the Bourgogne Wine Board. The U.S., which accounts for 19% of total Burgundy export revenues, posted 45% growth to €256 million ($282m) for the year on a 31% increase in volume to 20.6 million bottles (1.7m cases). Shipments to the U.S. surged starting last summer after the removal of tariffs on French wines.

But while growth was strong for Burgundy last year, the region’s stocks have been impacted by the sustained demand as well as the light 2021 harvest, which was down by one-third from the average. According to the Bourgogne Wine Board, the outlook for this year “will depend on the ability of the Bourgogne wine sector to supply its markets and respond to the multiple consumer expectations, not forgetting Covid-19, which comes in waves, and the consequences of the geopolitical situation and its impact on inflation.”—Daniel Marsteller
