New York Regulators Eye Sales Rollout This Fall

May 3, 2022

New York cannabis regulators have moved up the timeline for sales to begin in recent comments. Speaking at a public forum hosted by the Central Harlem Community Board, Cannabis Control Board chair Tremaine Wright said that cannabis products from conditional growers should be available for sale in the fall. Office of Cannabis Management director Chris Alexander, also in attendance, echoed the point, saying that some dispensaries will be online, backed by a full supply chain and active market.

The term “conditional growers” refers to the class of licenses reserved for applicants who qualify based on previous harm from the war on drugs. The Cannabis Control Board approved regulations in March for the license type and estimates that 100-200 conditional retail licenses will be approved in the first round of licensing. This means that sales may begin in the fall in a limited capacity, with general licensees most likely not getting up and running until early next year.—Danny Sullivan
