Oregon’s King Estate Expands With Pfeiffer Winery Purchase
November 17, 2022King Estate has acquired fellow Oregon winery Pfeiffer for an undisclosed sum. Pfeiffer’s 70-acre site in Junction City is planted mostly to Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It will expand King Estate’s planted vineyard area by about 15%, bringing it to above 1,000 acres, which the company says represents the largest biodynamic vineyard in North America.
King Estate’s namesake brand was up 23% to just under 150,000 cases last year, according to Impact Databank. The portfolio also includes North by Northwest, which has ranged from around 17,000-30,000 cases in recent years.
Overall, Oregon wines topped 5 million cases in the U.S. for the first time last year, as consumers continue to discover the category. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates also made a purchase in Oregon this year, acquiring the state’s second-ranked wine brand by volume—375,000-case player A to Z Wineworks—in September for an undisclosed sum.—Daniel Marsteller
