Cannabis Briefs for May 30, 2023
May 30, 2023•Eliot, Maine-based Sweet Dirt is partnering with Massachusetts-based The Drinkable Company to launch an array of THC drinks. Sweet Dirt’s beverage line will include THC seltzers, lemonades, and other drinks, with a line of fast-acting seltzers the first to hit the market. They launched this Memorial Day weekend in the company’s Portland, Waterville, Rockland, and Bridgton retail locations, as well as other retailers throughout the state. The seltzers contain 5mg of THC a 12-ounce can and come in Grapefruit and Blackberry flavors, among others. Sweet Dirt will also distribute and market The Drinkable Company’s Tiger Tea drinks in its home market, produced using Sweet Dirt’s cannabis grown at its nine-acre campus in southern Maine.
•Los Angeles, California-based Presidential Cannabis Co., a leading maker of pre-rolls, is expanding to Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Oklahoma, its first foray outside its home market. The No.-1 blunt brand according to BDSA data, Presidential’s lineup in its new markets will feature selections from the brand’s slow-burning Moon Rock portfolio, which are blunts and pre-rolls infused with THC distillate and coated in kief. Options include Presidential’s original, individually-wrapped 1g pre-rolls and 1.5g blunts, and the brand’s PeeWee line, which offers packages of three 0.5g pre-rolls and three 0.7g blunts. The initial rollout will include Grape, Peach Mango, Strawberry, and Watermelon flavors.
•The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission abandoned a pilot program for cannabis consumption lounges. Instead regulators will focus on crafting general regulations for social cannabis spaces. Commissioner Bruce Stebbins told WBUR that the pilot program would be “both burdensome and expensive,” adding, “We don’t feel that the pilot program is needed as it’s written. Eliminating the pilot program will help us dive into building that licensing and regulatory framework.” The move sets back the timeline for the implementation of public spaces for cannabis use to the hazy future.
•Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based Verist is launching a THC seltzer, bottled in partnership with Minneapolis brewery Fulton. The company’s seltzers, launching with the flavors Lemon Spritz and Strawberry Mint Spritz, are packaged in 12-ounce glass bottles, a choice justified by research suggesting that the inner lining of aluminum cans leeches THC from drinks and lowers their potency. Verist’s seltzers contain 3.5mg of THC a bottle and are available now in Minnesota bars, restaurants, and retailers, thanks to the quirk in Minnesota law that allows cannabis drinks and edibles to be sold more widely than in other markets.
