Diageo Names Debra Crew Interim CEO, Effective Immediately

June 5, 2023

Diageo has named Debra Crew interim CEO, with immediate effect. The announcement comes as the company said that current CEO Ivan Menezes has faced complications after seeking medical treatment, which included surgery for a stomach ulcer. The move ushers Crew into her new role roughly a month ahead of her originally scheduled start date of July 1, 2023.

While Crew will begin to serve as Diageo’s new CEO immediately, she will also join the Diageo board of directors as an executive director on July 1. Initially Crew was named as Menezes successor back in March, with Menezes originally scheduled to retire at the end of June. She’s served as Diageo’s COO since October 2022. Prior to that, she was president, Diageo North America and Global Supply, overseeing Diageo’s largest market during a period of strong growth. She originally joined the company in April 2019 as a non-executive director on the Diageo board.

Menezes has worked at Diageo since the late 1990s and led the company for the last 10 years. “Our thoughts are with our much-loved colleague, Ivan, and his family,” said the company in a statement.
