Gallo Acquires Central Coast’s Hahn Family Wines

June 21, 2023

E.&J. Gallo has bolted on another acquisition with the purchase of Central Coast California player Hahn Family Wines for an undisclosed sum. The strategic investment includes the Smith & Hook, Hahn, and Hahn SLH brands. The transaction excludes the Hahn family’s vineyard assets.

According to Impact Databank, the Hahn Founders line has been at around 300,000 cases in recent years, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the portfolio. The company’s Smith & Hook brand is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux red blends from Paso Robles and the Central Coast, while Hahn SLH is dedicated to offerings from the Santa Lucia Highlands.

Hahn, based in the Santa Lucia Highlands, has been on a premiumization campaign the past several years, looking to reshape its portfolio with more premium offerings. Among its more recent launches is a line of Arroyo Seco appellated wines under its Hahn Appellation Series, including a Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Grenache Syrah Mourvédre (GSM) priced $19-$20 a 750-ml.

“For over forty years, the Hahn family and their incredible team have produced expressive terroir-driven, quality wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Seco, Paso Robles and throughout the Central Coast. We are honored to welcome their brands into our portfolio,” said Steve Carlotti, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Brands at Gallo. “This acquisition reinforces Gallo’s strategy for continued growth while supporting our goal of delivering superior quality at great value to our consumers across all usage occasions.” —Daniel Marsteller
