Craft Brewing and Distilling News for July 13, 2023
July 13, 2023•San Francisco-based craft brewer Anchor Brewing will cease operations, owner Sapporo announced yesterday, citing declining sales, a competitive climate in the drinks industry, and inflation as contributing to the the brand’s struggles in recent years. Anchor recently ceased sales outside of its home state of California and slashed production of its Christmas Ale in a bid to stem costs. It also attempted unsuccessfully to find a buyer for the business, as Sapporo looked to offload the brewery, which it acquired in 2017 for $85 million. In the end, the company said in a statement, it was left “with no option but to make this sad decision to cease operations.” The 127-year-old brewer’s remaining inventory will be sold through its Anchor Public Taps tasting room.
