Cannabis Briefs for September 26, 2023
September 26, 2023•Columbia Care has undertaken a full rebrand, complete with a new name. Going forward Columbia Care will be known as The Cannabist Company. The name aligns the multistate operator’s cultivation and manufacturing operations with its Cannabist retail brand, which launched in 2021 and now sports 36 locations nationwide out of Columbia’s total of 94. The company will continue converting its retail portfolio to the Cannabist brand through next year. “This marks an important milestone in the company’s evolution, signaling a fresh chapter and solidifying our commitment to providing an ecosystem of collaborative technologies, products, and services,” said CEO Nicholas Vita.
•The Pennsylvania state senate passed a bill that would clear the state’s 25 medical marijuana growers to sell directly to consumers. The bill, which passed 44-3, would grant retail licenses to all the state’s grower/processors, allowing them to bypass retail level, which has been characterized by lawmakers as monopolistic. The bill now heads to the state house of representatives where it may be modified but is ultimately expected to pass. Some lawmakers are further optimistic that the uncontroversial passage of the bill provides fodder to again consider full recreational legalization in Pennsylvania. A bill that would do so was introduced in July and is languishing in committee.
