Napa’s Sequoia Grove Expands With Mt. Veeder Purchase

October 5, 2023

Napa Valley’s Sequoia Grove Winery is significantly expanding its vineyard holdings with the acquisition of 104 acres on Mt. Veeder for an undisclosed sum. Formerly owned by Donald Hess, the vineyard reaches elevations of over 1,700 feet and straddles northeastern slopes of the mountain. The winery will begin a two-year replant plan after the 2023 harvest with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties.

Approximately 30 estate acres will be planted on Mt. Veeder, expanding Sequoia Grove’s total estate vineyard holdings to 120 acres. Rick Bonitati, president of Sequoia Grove, said, “This acquisition helps diversify our estate properties, our grape sourcing, and the wines we will produce. It is especially important for us to invest in cooler climate sites like this one to help pave the long-term success of our winemaking program.”

The winery produces about 35,000 cases a year, with its nationally distributed wines including Napa Valley Cabernet ($55) and Chardonnay ($38). The portfolio also includes higher-end offerings ranging from vineyard designated wines at $120 up through proprietary Bordeaux blend Cambium at $170.—Daniel Marsteller
