Cannabis Briefs for October 16, 2023

October 16, 2023

•California governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have allowed cannabis cafes to sell non-cannabis foods and soft drinks, as well as feature live music at their venues. He cited protections around smoke-free work environments as the rationale. Concurrently, Newsom vetoed a bill that would have further restricted cannabis packaging designs in the state, asserting it was overly broad. Meanwhile, he signed bills changing the tracking of cannabis plants to eliminate single-use plastic tags, bar employers from questioning job applicants about prior cannabis use, and allow cannabis licensees to sue unlicensed cannabis operators in state superior court if they can prove damages from the unlicensed business, among others.

•Connecticut saw total cannabis sales, including both recreational and medical, top $25 million in September, marking a new record for the state. Adult-use sales totaled almost $14.4 million, while medical sales registered $10.8 million. Flower accounted for more than half of sales at 52%, while vapes took a 30% share and edibles were at 11%. The average price per product was about $38 in both the adult-use and medical markets, down from $45 in January when Connecticut initiated adult-use sales, reflecting the broad price declines across the business.

•Jones Soda is backing its Mary Jones cannabis beverages with a “Stoner October” tour of the Golden State, where the brand is in 350 dispensaries. Said to be the fastest growing cannabis brand in California, Mary Jones includes MF Grape, Root Beer, Cola, Berry Lemonade, Orange & Cream, and Green Apple available in 10mg and 100mg THC. The Stoner October tour will seek to stoke that momentum, as a branded tour bus will visit over 25 of the top cannabis dispensaries throughout California during the month.
