FTC Delays Decision On Kroger-Albertsons Until Next Month
December 18, 2023The FTC had been expected to rule on the proposed $25 billion merger of supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons by the end of last week, but the issue has now been pushed until at least next month. The move comes as Kroger says it has satisfied the FTC’s requirements to keep the deal moving forward, agreeing to sell 413 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers to alleviate competition concerns.
Kroger said in a court filing that it has agreed not to consummate the merger with Albertsons until at least January 17, under an agreement with the FTC. The supermarket titans, which had hoped to close the deal early next year, say the merger will lower prices for consumers while improving the customer experience and expanding choices in store aisles. Critics say the tie-up could reduce grocery competition in key markets around the country.—Daniel Marsteller
