New York Aims To Have 37 Dispensaries Open By Year-End

December 19, 2023

While New York’s cannabis market has been plagued by a slow retail rollout, the Empire State is now looking to ramp up licensing and open as many as a dozen new stores by the end of the year, reaching a total of 37 dispensaries statewide. Governor Kathy Hochul said the openings will include the first adult-use locations in Brooklyn, SoHo, Upper East Side, Westchester, Rochester, Troy, and Amsterdam, NY.

The progress comes following the recent settlement of two lawsuits that had hampered the licensing process across the state. With those impediments removed, licensing is set to see a much needed acceleration. In the first 10 months of the year, New York’s adult-use sales totaled $104 million, according to the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), compared with sales of $883 million in Missouri, where adult-use began in February, more than a month after New York.

Among those targeting growth in the market are multi-state operators like Curaleaf, Green Thumb, PharmaCann, and others, who have been active in the medical market and will now be able to join the adult-use category as well. Curaleaf announced last week that it’s opening wholesale sales in New York, launching five premium vape, edible, and flower offerings from its Select and Grassroots brands, including Select Briq Essentials, Select X Bites, Select Nano Bites, and Grassroots premium flower.

“We’re pleased that the OCM has taken the next step to allow existing registered operators the opportunity to participate in the adult use market,” said Curaleaf CEO Matt Darin, adding that the company is targeting statewide distribution by the end of the year.—Daniel Marsteller
