E.U. Officially Extends Suspension Of Tariffs On U.S. Whiskies
December 19, 2023Yesterday, news began trickling out that the E.U. would continue its suspension of tariffs on American whiskies dating to a Trump-era dispute over E.U. steel imports to the U.S. Today, it’s official that the E.U. will suspend tariffs on American whiskies for 15 months, through March 2025, in a boon for U.S. distillers.
“This agreement is welcome news for U.S. distillers across the country who were facing the reimposition and doubling of the E.U. tariff to 50% in the new year,” said Chris Swonger, president of the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. (DISCUS). “We urge the Biden administration to continue striving for a permanent end to all debilitating tariffs in disputes unrelated to the spirits sector. Until the threat of these tariffs returning is fully removed, the uncertainty will continue to restrict American whiskey export growth in our most important international market.”
