News Briefs for March 14, 2024
March 14, 2024•Toasted barrel whiskeys have been around in some shape or form since 2014 when Michter’s pioneered the style with its US*1 Bourbon. While incidental toasting occurs during the charring process, toasting barrels more deeply before charring is less common, as it’s an extra step that adds cost and time. In recent years, however, more distilleries have experimented with toast levels, and Kentucky Peerless is the latest to join the ranks with its new Toasted Bourbon. Whisky Advocate has more.
•Owning an estate in Bordeaux had been the longtime dream of friends Golan Flam of Flam Winery and Eran Pick of Tzora Vineyards, both winemakers in Israel’s Judean Hills region. After five years of hunting, the partners have purchased Château Tour du Haut-Moulin, a cru bourgeois estate in Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc region on the Left Bank. Wine Spectator has the full story.

•Edrington has released the Macallan Horizon, a new whisky debuting in collaboration with luxury car maker Bentley. The single malt Scotch whisky is bottled at 46.6% abv and blends together six first-fill Sherry-seasoned oak casks to create the limited release. Macallan Horizon is packaged in a horizontal glass container, enclosed in a ribbon of aluminum, and surrounded by a wood and copper sculpture. The whisky is now available globally in limited quantities for $50,000 a 700-ml. The Macallan had U.S. volume of 232,000 cases last year, according to Impact Databank.
