Bipartisan State AGs Urge Action On Hemp-Derived THC
March 26, 2024A bipartisan group of 20 attorneys general from across the U.S. is asking Congress to crack down on hemp-derived cannabis products. The AGs, made up of 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans, want Congress to close a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill (which legalized and regulated hemp products) that has allowed the proliferation of products containing hemp-derived THC.
“Because of the ambiguity created by the 2018 Farm Bill, a massive gray market worth an estimated $28 billion has exploded, forcing cannabis-equivalent products into our economies regardless of states’ intentions to legalize cannabis use, and dangerously undermining regulations and consumer protections in states where adult-use legal cannabis programs are already in place,” they wrote. While the 2018 Farm Bill was set to expire in 2023, it was extended until September 2024, and as yet a new draft for beyond that date has yet to emerge. —Shane English
