Washington’s Ackley Brands Purchases Charles Smith Wines From The Wine Group

August 13, 2024

Seattle, Washington’s Ackley Brands has acquired Charles Smith Wines from The Wine Group. Financial terms weren’t disclosed. The acquired brands—including Kung Fu Girl, Eve, The Velvet Devil, Band of Roses, Boom Boom!, and Chateau Smith—total 160,000 cases of production. Kung Fu Girl Riesling (80,000 cases) leads the way, while Velvet Devil Merlot and Boom Boom! Syrah combine for 60,000 cases. Going forward the wines will be made at Ackley Brands’ winemaking facility in Prosser, Washington.

The move comes less than two years after The Wine Group purchased Charles Smith Wines from Constellation Brands. It represents a continuing acquisition spree for Ackley, which in April purchased Washington’s Hogue and Columbia wines from Gallo—totaling around 130,000 cases—and in May added Betz Family Winery. Founder Brandon Ackley is also co-founder and managing director of Ackley Capital, a private investment firm based in Seattle.—Shane English
