November 1, 2024•Diageo has launched a new 12-year-old blended whisky in Crown Royal’s Reserve Collection. The whisky is bottled at 40% abv and carries a suggested price of $50 a bottle. The new entry follows a limited edition 31-year-old whisky launched earlier this month and a single malt from Crown that hit shelves in June. Crown Royal had U.S. volume of 7.8 million cases in the U.S. last year, including its flavored whiskies and RTDs, according to Impact Databank.
•Rusty Pape, CEO of Prestige Wine Imports, is set to retire at the end of the year after a three-decade run with the company. Prestige Wine Imports, the New York-based subsidiary of Italy’s Gruppo Mezzacorona, is a key player in the U.S. market’s Italian wine category, with volume of over 1 million cases annually. Moving forward, the company will be co-led by Andrew Meyer, chief sales officer, and December Semexant, CFO. SND recently caught up with Meyer for an update on the business.
•Jan Shrem, who left an indelible mark on California’s wine industry through his dedication to the arts and charitable generosity, died last month at the age of 94. The founder of Clos Pegase winery in Calistoga, Shrem was also a consummate philanthropist, contributing to The MET Opera, Festival Napa Valley, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the University of California at San Francisco Neurology Clinic. Perhaps most notable was Shrem’s long-lasting partnership with the University of California at Davis, supporting the arts, including helping to fund the construction of the university’s Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. •Tobermory Distillery, located on Scotland’s Isle of Mull, has launched two new single malts in the U.S., one from the distillery’s namesake unpeated brand and the other from peated single malt Ledaig. The Tobermory 21 Year Old is bottled at 46.3% abv and matured in refill whisky barrels before finishing in Oloroso Sherry casks. The Tobermory bottling retails for around $281 a 700-ml. and is available in limited quantities. The new U.S. release from Ledaig is an 18-year-old single malt bottled at 46.3% abv that spent 16 years in ex-Bourbon casks before a two-year finish in Oloroso casks. It carries a suggested price of $177 a 700-ml. In September, Campari Group took a minority stake in Capevin Holdings, the parent company of Tobermory and Ledaig, among other single malts. Terlato handles Tobermory in the U.S.
