Massachusetts Cannabis Retail Reaches $1.66 Billion In 2024
February 5, 2025Adult-use cannabis sales in Massachusetts reached $1.66 billion from January 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025. The state ended the year on a strong note, with December sales reaching $140.2 million, the third-largest sales total since adult-use sales went live in 2018. The state’s other two record-setting months also happened in 2024, with July and August sales both north of $140 million. Lifetime adult-use sales have now crossed $7 billion, with two Massachusetts counties—Middlesex and Worcester—each bringing in more than $1 billion in lifetime sales.
For 2024, sales were consistently strong, with no month seeing less than $125 million in sales and the majority of months reporting more than $135 million. Six of the last seven days of the year—the exception being New Year’s Day—saw sales at or near $4 million.
Acting chair of the state’s Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), Bruce Stebbins, still sees further runway for growth. He recently told local news channel Spectrum News 1 that cannabis is still a new industry in Massachusetts and that the CCC and the industry have more work to do. To date, Massachusetts has 700 licensed retailers and more than 20,000 workers across the industry. —Shane English
