February 11, 2025•Kendall-Jackson has partnered with artist and designer Victor Solomon to design wine labels co-branded with the NBA, of which the brand is the first official wine partner. The partnership will officially kick off during NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, where Kendall-Jackson and Solomon will unveil the wine label designs at NBA Crossover, a multi-day fan fest event. Kendall-Jackson will launch a co-branded Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, a Monterey County Chardonnay, and a Lake County Sauvignon Blanc in August. Kendall-Jackson has U.S. volume of approximately 3 million cases annually, according to Impact Databank.
•Australia’s Penfolds and the Rhone Valley’s La Chapelle have collaborated on a new collectible wine, Grange La Chapelle 2021. Composed of 50% La Chapelle from Hermitage and 50% Grange made from a collection of select South Australian vineyards in Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley, the new bottling is half Australian Shiraz and half French Syrah. The two wineries intend to release the blend annually in limited quantities. Grange La Chapelle 2021 is priced at A$3,500 ($2,200) a bottle, with Penfolds selling a small allocation direct-to-consumer in the U.S. and Australia.
•Growing grocery chain Aldi, which sells wine and beer depending on the market, intends to open 225 new store locations this year, with a focus on the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, Southern California, and Arizona. Aldi last year acquired Southeastern Grocers—owner of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket—and plans to convert 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027. Meanwhile, Aldi has divested 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys locations to a consortium including C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors for an undisclosed sum. Last year Aldi opened nearly 120 stores, bringing its total count to over 2,400, which makes it the third-largest grocery chain by store count in the U.S.
