Cannabis Rescheduling Remains Stalled by DEA
July 15, 2025The long-promised rescheduling of cannabis remains stalled, with the current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) appearing unwilling to move the process forward. No new hearing dates have been set for the reschedule, allowing the process—which was supported by the outgoing Biden administration and President Trump on the campaign trail—to languish.
The DEA is currently headed by Robert Murphy, as Trump’s choice for administrator, Terrance Cole, has not been confirmed by the Senate. While it’s likely that Trump’s administrator would follow the President’s guidance on the reschedule, Cole’s history demonstrates his anti-legalization credentials. There has been some pressure on the White House to move on the issue, mostly from social media personalities, but the president has not made rescheduling cannabis a priority so far in his second term.—Shane English
