Craft Brewing And Distilling News for September 5, 2012

September 5, 2012

•Mike Magoulas, a former regional vice president for MillerCoors, has been named CEO of Kansas City, Missouri-based Boulevard Brewing. He replaces John McDonald, who founded Boulevard in 1989 and has said he wanted to step away from his CEO duties in order to become more active on the engineering and brewing side of operations. Magoulas was most recently a beer and wine consultant in Joplin, Missouri. Over the last two decades, McDonald has built Boulevard into one of the largest U.S. craft brewers. Boulevard expects to brew roughly 175,000 barrels of beer this year, and now sells its brews in more than 20 states across the U.S.

Boston Beer Co.’s Angry Orchard cider, which rolled out nationally earlier this year, has expanded the brand with the Cider House Collection, a line of artisan hard ciders. Cider House Collection’s first two entries are Angry Orchard Iceman, said to combine crisp apples with notes of caramel and toffee; and Angry Orchard Strawman, which features ripe apple, vanilla and honeysuckle flavors. Both Iceman and Strawman are 10% abv and retail for $14.99 a 750-ml. The new offerings are now available in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington and California.

•New Jersey’s Hunterdon Distributors has added Croydon, Pennsylvania-based Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. to its portfolio of craft beers. They will distribute the company’s year-round brews— Tribute Tripel, Trauger Pilsner and County Line IPA—as well as the Leon Russian Imperial Stout in New Jersey beginning September 10. The initial launch will be limited to draft only, with bottles slated for release later this year. Distribution plans for Neshaminy’s seasonal offerings and limited release brews are still in the early planning stages for the coming year. Neshaminy Creek began brewing in May 2012, and availability was previously limited to growler fills at the brewery and distribution in the local Bucks County and metro-Philadelphia area.
