Harpoon Brewery Boosts Capacity, Sees Double-Digit Growth Continuing
September 26, 2012Boston-based Harpoon Brewery is expanding production capacity and now projects double-digit growth for 2012 to nearly 200,000 barrels, co-founder Rich Doyle tells Shanken News Daily.
Harpoon, ranked the nation’s eighth-largest craft brewer by the Brewers Association, is distributed in the eastern half of the country. Doyle says he has no immediate plans for expansion into new markets, preferring to focus on incremental growth in volumes and capacity. “We haven’t added new markets in three and half years,” he notes. “This isn’t forever. Entering markets further west is pretty expensive.”
Thanks to consistent capacity expansion over the years, Doyle says Harpoon is “in good shape in terms of our brew houses and packaging,” with room and plans for the next 75,000 barrels.
In addition to its facility in Boston, Harpoon operates a brewery in Windsor, Vermont. Currently the company is expanding its visitor center and beer hall in Boston, a project slated for completion by year-end.
The latest addition to Harpoon’s year-round portfolio of brews, Rich & Dan’s Rye IPA—named for Doyle and partner and co-founder Dan Kenary—was rolled out in the spring, the first new year-round brew for Harpoon in more than two years. Harpoon IPA is the brewery’s top-selling label.
