Pernod Introduces Absolut Amber, A Blend Of White And Dark Spirits

Absolut vodka has launched Absolut Amber—a new oak-aged expression—in the North American travel retail channel. Handcrafted by master blender Per Hermansson, Absolut Amber is created using a blend of Swedish, American and Bourbon barrel-aged spirits and oak-macerated spirits. According to the company, the 40%-abv offering is a “transformative” product designed to blur the line between white and dark spirits. The new entry follows another “hybrid” innovation from Pernod Ricard, Malibu Red, a rum-Tequila mix that launched last year and is already above 100,000 cases in the U.S. market.

Absolut Amber is currently available at JFK International Airport, Miami International Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, as well as in Panama’s travel retail segment and select on-premise venues, with additional markets in the pipeline. Absolut was up 1.6% to 4.6 million cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

In other Pernod Ricard news, the company’s deputy CEO Alexandre Ricard said yesterday at a briefing in London that the group is on the prowl for potential bolt-on acquisitions in the U.S., where he acknowledged that Pernod is “underexposed.” Noting that Pernod has about €1 billion ($1.3b) to spend on acquisitions before it would risk losing its investment-grade credit rating, Ricard said that while smaller buys are more likely in the short term, bigger plays could not be ruled out down the road.
