Liquor Stores N.A. Reports Sales Increase, Mulls Plans For More U.S. Expansion
March 10, 2014Liquor Stores N.A. Ltd. said its sales for calendar year 2013 increased 4.9% to $661 million. Total U.S. store sales last year were $157.5 million, compared with $149 million in 2012. Liquor Stores N.A. operates the 22-store Brown Jug chain in Alaska and the 12-unit Liquor Barn concept in Kentucky, in addition to more than 200 retail liquor stores in Canada.
For the fourth quarter, the company reported a sales increase of 2.6% to $184.1 million. While same-store sales in Canada increased slightly during the fourth quarter, U.S. stores registered a 1.7% decline. In Kentucky, Liquor Stores N.A. attributed that performance to unfavorable weather and pressure from changes to wet-versus-dry laws in the state. In Alaska, the company cited stronger competition from wholesale clubs and the impact of last fall’s government shutdown on federal employees.
Liquor Stores N.A. claims to be the largest publicly traded liquor retailer in North America. During a conference call with analysts last week, company officials addressed plans to drive long-term growth and profitability. Among the key goals is expansion that may include entry into other U.S. cities, the company said.
