Wal-Mart’s Push For Expanded Spirits Sales In Florida Hits Roadblock

Florida state Senator Bill Galvano has withdrawn a bill for consideration in the Regulated Industries Committee that would have loosened requirements for spirits retailers in the state and paved the way for expanded grocery sales. SB 804 would have amended Florida’s current law that mandates retailers selling liquor to be partitioned off from other retail items such as groceries not related to spirits and to have a separate entrance.

Wal-Mart and Target had supported the bill in a public relations push called “Floridians for Fair Business Practices.” However, they ran into intense opposition from the state’s independent retailers and chains like ABC Fine Wine and Spirits and convenience stores. The companion bill in the House, HB 877, hasn’t gained support either. Florida enacted the separation law in 1935 after the repeal of Prohibition.
