News Alert: Diageo Unveils $100 Million On-Premise Recovery Fund

June 24, 2020

Diageo has announced a $100 million effort to boost on-premise businesses as they recover from Covid-19 and begin to welcome customers through their doors again. The two-year “Raising the Bar” program will begin next month and includes the previously announced $20 million Community Fund in the U.S.

The fund will provide practical equipment for on-premise outlets to implement new social distancing measures, digital skills training, and contactless technology. It will reach major hospitality centers including New York, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Sydney and beyond.

For example, in the U.K., funding will go toward ‘hygiene kits’ with permanent sanitizer dispenser units, medical grade hand sanitizer, a range of personal protection equipment, help to pubs and bars to establish online reservations and cashless systems, mobile bars, and outdoor equipment.

Diageo also urged governments to provide more aid to the on-premise. “We are calling on governments around the world to provide long-term recovery packages to help the hospitality sector,” said Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes. “These businesses play an essential role in bringing people together to socialise and celebrate–something that we have all missed so much during this terrible crisis–and sustain hundreds of millions of jobs, which provide a first foot on the employment ladder for young people.”—Daniel Marsteller
