Texas Retailer Sigel’s Reveals Female-Friendly Strategy

The buying power of women has soared, with most estimates showing that female shoppers account for more than 80% of all purchasing decisions. Beverage alcohol is very much in that mix, and many liquor retailers have responded by revamping their selling strategies. Interview: D.C. Retailer Calvert Woodley Sees Sales Hitting $20 Million This Year

Washington, D.C.-based retailer Calvert Woodley is renowned for its Bordeaux selection and has been selling Bordeaux futures since 1966. With a mere 5,000 square feet of floor space, the store’s revenues are projected to top $20 million this year—ranking it among the country’s highest-grossing beverage alcohol retailers per square foot. The business was launched in 1982 when Calvert Liquors merged with Woodley Wine & Liquor, and it’s still owned and operated by original owners Aaron Bernstein and Ed Sands. Sales have increased modestly in recent years, with wine comprising 55% of revenues, spirits 35%, beer 5% and cheese and deli 5%. Total Wine Moving Into Texas And New Mexico, Sets Five-Year Plan To Reach $2 Billion In Sales

Potomac, Maryland-based Total Wine & More, which just opened its 78th store in Sacramento, California, plans to move into the Dallas market with one store and into New Mexico with at least two stores next year. The company has also set a five-year goal of doubling revenues from this year’s $1 billion, according to Total Wine’s executive vice president Michael Salzberg, who joined the company three months ago after long tenures at E&J Gallo Winery, PepsiCo, Campbell Soup Co. and its Pepperidge Farm subsidiary.
