Alsace, the cool-climate wine region in northeastern France, has just 38,600 acres under vine and annual production of 10 million 9-liter cases—a fraction of the 275,000 acres of vineyards and 56.7 million cases of annual output for Bordeaux. Table wine sales increased 3.2% by volume in the 52-week period ending May 28, to 126.8 million cases, and 4.2% by value, to $9.5 billion, according to Nielsen.
